Reports suggest that Mauricio Pochettino, the head coach of Chelsea, is facing an ‘ultimatum’ from the club’s board regarding his future at the helm of the Blues.
This development comes as Chelsea prepares to conduct a comprehensive review of Pochettino’s performance at the conclusion of his debut season in charge.
Throughout the campaign, Chelsea has encountered challenges, particularly in the Premier League, where they have struggled to find consistency.
Despite criticisms, some pundits have come to Pochettino’s defense, attributing the team’s setbacks to broader issues within the club’s ownership structure.
Pochettino did lead Chelsea to the Carabao Cup final this season, and although they narrowly missed out on the FA Cup final following a defeat to Manchester City in the semi-finals, his achievements have not shielded him from scrutiny.
As it stands, Chelsea occupies the seventh position in the Premier League standings, trailing sixth-placed Newcastle United by a mere two points and fifth-placed Tottenham by four points.
In response to these circumstances, Chelsea’s board has reportedly issued an ultimatum to Pochettino, indicating that his job will be secure if the team secures qualification for the Europa League.
Securing a sixth-place finish in the league would likely guarantee Chelsea a spot in the Europa League next season, unless Manchester United, finishing seventh or lower, manage to win the FA Cup against Manchester City.
However, failure to meet this requirement could spell trouble for Pochettino’s tenure at Chelsea.
In such a scenario, the club may explore alternative coaching options, with several names already linked to the role.
Among the contenders, Jose Mourinho emerges as the frontrunner, according to Sky Bet, followed by Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi.
