EPL: Rio Ferdinand commends Dortmund’s defensive mastery in taming Mbappe

Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand, has lauded Borussia Dortmund’s tactical prowess in neutralizing Kylian Mbappe, as they secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday.

Mbappe’s inability to find the back of the net over both legs proved pivotal as Dortmund emerged triumphant with a 2-0 aggregate win, effectively ending the French forward’s European campaign with PSG amid speculation about his future departure from the Ligue 1 champions.

Reflecting on Mbappe’s subdued performance, Ferdinand expressed surprise at the uncharacteristic display from the usually prolific striker, noting his historical tendency to shine on the grandest stages.

Ferdinand attributed Dortmund’s success in containing Mbappe to their astute defensive strategy, highlighting their collective effort in denying the PSG star opportunities to exploit one-on-one situations.

“This is unusual for Kylian Mbappe. We are accustomed to seeing him at the biggest stage,” Ferdinand told TNT Sports.

“All through his career he has seemed to step up, but over the two legs he has been very subdued.

“You have to give Dortmund massive credit. They didn’t allow Mbappe to get one v one.

“Those big players find something when they get into a space. The chance at the end, the volley, that was a chance for him to being clinical.

“But, more credit goes to the team in yellow, Dortmund. The manager Edin Terzic deserves massive credit.”
