In the midst of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Ademola Lookman, the dynamic forward for the Super Eagles, reflected on his arduous journey through the tournament.
Tasked primarily with commanding the left wing under the guidance of coach Jose Peseiro, Lookman proved his mettle by starting six of the seven crucial matches.
Throughout the competition in Ivory Coast, Lookman’s prowess was evident as he netted three goals, securing his well-deserved spot in the Tournament’s Team of the Tournament.
The semifinal clash against the formidable Bafana Bafana of South Africa tested Nigeria’s resilience, ultimately leading to a victorious outcome via penalty shootout. Yet, it was the scorching encounter against Equatorial Guinea in the tournament opener that lingered as the most demanding for Lookman and his teammates.
Facing off at 2 pm amidst relentless heat and suffocating humidity, the Super Eagles battled fiercely against the elements, navigating through the adversities of the climatic conditions to emerge triumphant.
In retrospect, Lookman acknowledged, telling Calister Enejele, “Probably Equatorial Guinea because we played at 2 pm, the heat and humidity was tough for us.
“Probably you have to say that game [was the most hardest for us].”
