Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr has explained why his team defeated the Super Eagles in Mondays’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The Cheetahs claimed a famous 2-1 victory over their neighbours at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan.
Nigeria took the lead through Raphael Onyedika in the 26th minute.
Rohr’s side, however, rallied to win the game through goals from Jordel Dossou and Steve Mounie before half time.
Speaking at his post-match interview, Rohr said his side’s fighting spirit and organisation gave them the victory over Finidi George’s men.
“It was a great game for us, this was the first time our ‘A’ team will beat the Super Eagles,” Rohr said.
“It was difficult when we conceded the first goal, but the reaction was great and my young players did very well. I am happy for them.
“Their fighting spirit and organisation gave us our victory.”
Benin now top Group C with seven points from four games, while Nigeria sits in fifth position with three points.
