Sports Newspapers: 5 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Sports Newspapers:

  1. Germany on Wednesday became the first country to qualify for the Round of 16 at Euro 2024 after beating Hungary 2-0. Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan scored the goals for the hosts.
  2. England produced their best performance of the T20 World Cup so far to begin the Super 8s stage with a composed eight-wicket win against West Indies. Having cannily restricted the previously unbeaten co-hosts to 180-4 on a good pitch, the defending champions completed the chase with 15 balls to spare.
  3. South Africa survived a scare before beating USA by 18 runs in the first game of the Super 8s at the T20 World Cup in Antigua. After slipping to 76-5 in pursuit of 195, a superb partnership worth 91 between Andries Gous and Harmeet Singh gave USA hope of a stunning victory.
  4. Nigeria’s group opponents in the 2024 Olympic Games, Japan, will face Ghana in a friendly next month. The friendly is slated for the Kanazawa Stadium on Saturday, July 13.
  5. Andy Murray will undergo a scan which will determine whether he plays at Wimbledon after he was forced to retire with an injury at Queen’s Club. Murray was losing 4-1 in the first set of his second round match against Jordan Thompson when he pulled out, having received treatment around the lower back area and hips after three games.
