Euro 2024: Switzerland becomes first country to qualify for quarter-finals as Italy crash out

Switzerland on Saturday evening became the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals of the ongoing Euro 2024 in Germany.

This was possible after they defeated defending champions 2-0 in the first Round of 16 fixture.

The Swiss had 65 per cent of the ball and eight of the first nine attempts at goal prior, before taking the lead through Remo Freuler.

Ruben Vargas then doubled their advantage just 27 seconds after the restart after the Italians lost possession from their own kick-off.

Switzerland will now face either England or Slovakia in the quarter-final next weekend in Dusseldorf.

Italy are now the third team in the last three European Championships to have been eliminated in the round of 16 after winning the tournament.
