Former CAF president, Issa Hayatou is dead

A former president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Issa Hayatou, is dead.

Hayatou died on Thursday after a long illness, according to straitstimes.

His death comes on the eve of his 78th birthday.

Hayatou served as the president of CAF for 29 years from 1988 until 2017.

He also the acting FIFA president from 2015-2016, following Sepp Blatter’s suspnsion by the world football governing body.

In 2011, Hayatou was punished by the IOC over his role in an alleged bribery scandal at FIFA.

He was accused of receiving about $20,000 from a sports marketing company, ISL, in 1995.

Hayatou however insisted the money was a gift for his confederation.
