EPL: Ex-Chelsea defender rules out Maresca winning title this season

Former Chelsea defender, Jason Cundy has ruled out any possibility of the club winning the title under manager Enzo Maresca this season.

Cundy said this while hitting out at anyone who backed the Blues as contenders under Maresca this season.

Maresca’s side recently dropped points after playing a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

They currently sit in 4th position on the Premier League table, behind the likes of Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Arsenal.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Cundy said: “Anyone talking about Chelsea winning the title are idiots.”

Co-host and former Liverpool midfielder Jermaine Pennant then replied: “No, there was a little period Cundy, you were the closest challengers.”

However, Cundy responded: “But that doesn’t mean that you’re in the title race.

“No we weren’t. Honestly I can’t stress [that] enough. The ‘if’ [winning run] was never happening. The only people that wanted that [title talk] were people that didn’t watch enough of Chelsea.”

Chelsea will face Wolves in their next Premier League tie on January 20.
