Champions League: Huge blow for EPL, as Bundesliga, Serie A get five slots for next season

Germany and Italy will get five slots each in next season’s Champions League.

This was confirmed on Wednesday night, after Borussia Dortmund defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final in Germany.

The result confirmed Bundesliga’s second place in UEFA’s coefficient table for this season.

Serie A had already sealed the first spot in April.

As a result, Serie A and Bundesliga can no longer be overtaken by the final remaining contenders, England and France.

Two leagues will be rewarded with an extra place through the European Performance Spots, given to the two leagues with the best average performance across the three European competitions each season and comes as part of the revamp to expand the Champions League to a 36-team competition.
