AFCONQ 2025: Embarrassment – Appiah reacts as Ghana set to play games in Nigeria

Former captain of the Ghana national team, Stephen Appiah, has said it is a national embarrassment for them to play their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in another country.

This follows reports that the Black Stars could possibly play the remainder of their home fixtures in Nigeria.

“Playing a qualifier outside Ghana, except in a tournament, is a national embarrassment,” Appiah wrote on X.

“We must prioritize hosting our own games and protect our football pride.”

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has banned Ghana from using the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

CAF’s inspection team ruled that the stadium was not suitable for competitive matches due to major structural concerns, which include poor drainage, uneven playing surfaces, and uneven grass cover.

With other venues like the Cape Coast and Accra Sports Stadiums also failed to meet CAF’s standards.
