Former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher has claimed that goalkeeper Stefan Ortega has won Manchester City the Premier League title.
Carragher spoke after Man City’s Premier League 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night.
The Englishman believes Ortega’s late save to deny Heung-Min Son will “haunt” Arsenal fans in ten years’ time.
Recall that Son’s shot was brilliantly saved by Ortega, before Erling Haaland scored his second goal of the game from the penalty spot just minutes later to secure a vital three points for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast, Carragher said:
“[Tottenham] gave Man City more problems than I have probably seen anybody give them for a long time, in terms of the chances they created.
“Ortega, tonight alone, has won them the Premier League title,” Carragher said.
“Obviously a lot’s gone into that over the season but when you look at this game, if he doesn’t make those saves at 1-0, Arsenal will win the league. That’s how close it is.”
He added, “That Son chance is the moment Arsenal fans will remember in five, 10 years’ time. Even if they win the title in the next five years – and they’ve got a chance of doing that because they are a great team with a great manager – that chance will still haunt them.”
