Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, pointed to a spate of injuries as a contributing factor to their demoralizing 4-0 defeat against Crystal Palace on Monday night.
The hosts, led by goals from Michael Olise (twice), Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Tyrick Mitchell, secured a comprehensive victory, completing a double over the Red Devils this season.
This setback leaves Ten Hag’s squad languishing in eighth place, with their aspirations of securing European football next season waning.
Reflecting on the defeat after the game, Ten Hag lamented the team’s defensive woes, telling Sky Sports:
“There are always reasons and everyone sees our backline and we have huge problems.
“At the end of the day, we have to deal with it and we should have done better than we did.”
The Dutchman added: “It is clear and it is obvious. This is underperforming. We didn’t act how we want to do it and it’s by far not good enough.
“We are very disappointed, but the fans were always behind us and we keep fighting, like the fans did.”
