Eric Chelle: Even Mourinho, Ancelotti will be pressure – Ex-Super Eagles winger begs Nigerians

Former Super Eagles winger, Garba Lawal, has urged Nigerians to support the team following Eric Chelle’s recent appointment as head coach of the three-time African champions.

Chelle’s appointment was greeted with widespread criticism by Nigerian football fans and pundits.

Some questioned if the 47-year-old has the capability to manage the Super Eagles as they hope to get qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, had recently confirmed Chelle as Super Eagles head coach and immediately tasked the former Mali manager with leading Nigeria to 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles have been poor in their qualifiers so far.

They have failed to win a game from the four matches played in the qualifiers qualifier and are desperate for a change of results.

However, Lawal wants everyone must support the team under Chelle, adding that even if former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho or current Real Madrid manager Ancelotti took the Super Eagles job, they would still feel the pressure.

“There is no room for complacency. This is not about the NFF, it’s about Nigeria qualifying for the World Cup,” Lawal told Brila FM.

“Everyone must support the team. Even if Mourinho or Ancelotti took this job, they would still feel the pressure.

“Our situation can make the coach to be afraid, but for him to be bold enough to take the job, it is something different.

“It’s not every coach that will take this type of job. It takes courage to take on a role like this, given the current circumstances.”

The Super Eagles’ next World Cup qualifier is against Rwanda in March.
