Euro 2024: Southgate told to drop Harry Kane

Former Scotland international, Ally McCoist has told England manager Gareth Southgate to drop captain Harry Kane from his starting XI if the Bayern Munich striker is not performing well at the Euro 2024.

Kane had failed to score in the Three Lions’ 1-0 win against Serbia in their first game.

The former Tottenham star scored his first goal at the tournament in England’s 1-1 draw against Denmark.

Kane was taken off in the 70th minute during England’s tie against Denmark, with Southgate bringing in Ollie Watkins to replace him.

But there have concerns over England’s attacking options at the tournament so far, with pundits criticising Southgate for his tactics.

However, McCoist feels Southgate should be bold enough to drop Kane if the team would benefit from it.

“Stuart Pearce is 100% right when it comes to being bold enough to drop Harry Kane, I include everybody,” McCoist told BoyleSports.

“It’s similar to Cristiano Ronaldo, the fact of the matter is, if it benefits the team, you think there’s a substitution required, whether it is Harry Kane or Ronaldo, it doesn’t matter who it is. That is when the manager earns his corn.”

He added, “It doesn’t matter if it’s Harry Kane, if he’s not playing well then it might be a better option with Ollie Watkins using his pace running through.”

England’s next game is y their final against Slovenia on Tuesday.
