Sports Newspapers: 5 things you need to know this Monday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Sports Newspapers:

  1. Southampton on Sunday defeated Leeds United 1-0 in the Championship playoff final to win promotion to the Premier League. Adam Armstrong’s composed finish in the first half proved to be the decisive goal.
  2. Edo Queens have won the 2024 Nigeria Women Football League title, TOTAL SPORTS reports. The Benin Girls were crowned champions after they  were held to a 1-1  draw in their final game at the NWFL Super Six playoff.
  3. Charles Leclerc won his first Monaco Grand Prix with a lights-to-flag victory on home soil after a huge crash on the opening lap which saw the race stopped. Leclerc held off an early challenge from McLaren’s Oscar Piastri to take his first win since July 2022 as his Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz took third and Lando Norris was fourth.

4.Kolkata Knight Riders won the Indian Premier League after a thumping eight-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final. Mitchell Starc set the tone for a brilliant KKR performance when he bowled Sunrisers opener Abhishek Sharma with a beauty in the first over as Sunrisers never recovered and were bowled out for 113, the lowest total in an IPL final.

  1. Andy Murray may have played his final French Open singles match after losing to Stan Wawrinka in a one-sided first-round meeting between the veteran pair. Murray has said this year is likely to be his last one on tour and avoided surgery on an ankle injury in order to return to Roland Garros, but his lack of court time was evident in a 6-4 6-4 6-2 loss to the 39-year-old Swiss.
