Sports Newspapers: 5 things you need to know this Monday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Sports Newspapers:

  1. Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face the Squirrels of Benin Republic in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Monday evening. The match will take place at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan.
  2. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won a gripping wet-dry Canadian Grand Prix that developed into a five-car battle for the lead over the final 10 laps. Verstappen expertly managed a restart after a safety-car period with 11 laps to go to bolt into a decisive lead while McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri fought with the Mercedes of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton behind him.
  3. Scottie Scheffler holed a five-foot putt on the last to hold off Collin Morikawa and win the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament by one stroke to claim his fifth title of the year. In doing so, the world number one became just the second player after Tiger Woods to win the Players Championship, Masters and Memorial in the same year.
  4. Coco Gauff and Katerina Siniakova were crowned French Open women’s doubles champions after a convincing 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 win over Italian pair Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani. American Gauff, 20, won her first major doubles title while her Czech partner claimed her eighth – and third in Paris.
  5. Scotland raced to a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over Oman at the T20 World Cup to go top of Group B. A wonderful unbeaten 61 from Brandon McMullen guided Scotland to their target of 151 in just 13.1 overs as Richie Berrington’s side delivered a real statement.
