Sports Newspapers: 5 things you need to know this Saturday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Sports Newspapers:

  1. Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe says he is “committed” to the club as long as he is “happy and feels supported”, after being linked with replacing Gareth Southgate as England manager. Southgate, who was appointed in 2016, resigned on Tuesday in the wake of England’s 2-1 defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
  2. England ended France’s dominance of the Under-20 World Cup and claimed their first title since 2016 with a 21-13 victory in the final. Lock Joe Bailey powered over from close range to score the opening try and hand England a narrow lead at half-time in Cape Town after Hugo Reus’ two penalties for France.
  3. McLaren’s Lando Norris set an impressive pace in practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix after Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed heavily. Norris headed Max Verstappen’s upgraded Red Bull by 0.243 seconds, with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz third, 0.397secs off the pace.
  4. Tadej Pogacar continued his dominance at the Tour de France as he won his fourth stage and substantially extended his overall lead.
The Slovenian attacked in the Alps with nine kilometres to go, making up almost three minutes to catch and pass stage leader Matteo Jorgenson of the United States.
  5. Former England captain Sam Tomkins has come out of retirement to play for Catalans Dragons this season. The 35-year-old spent four years with Dragons before retiring from playing in 2023, largely because of a persistent knee problem.
