Sports Newspapers: 5 things you need to know this Thursday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Sports Newspapers:

  1. England will face Spain in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday. This was possible after they defeated the Netherlands 2-1 in the semi-final encounter on Wednesday night.
  2. Colombia will face Argentina in the Copa America 2024 final on Sunday night. This was possible after they defeated Uruguay 1-0 in the semi-final on Wednesday night.
  3. The USA have sacked head coach Gregg Berhalter following their Copa America group-stage exit. This month they became the first host nation to be eliminated from the group phase after defeats by Panama and Uruguay.
  4. Jelena Ostapenko dramatically banished her own coach from the No.1 Court during her Wimbledon quarter-final match against Barbora Krejcikova. Ostapenko was seen trying to dismiss someone from her box during the second set – but they all initially remained – which only increased her frustrations.
  5. Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman criticised the use of video assistant referees (VAR) for “breaking football” after England were awarded a contentious penalty in Tuesday’s tense Euro 2024 semi-final. The Dutch had taken an early lead through Xavi Simons’ powerful strike but Gareth Southgate’s side were handed a lifeline when Harry Kane was caught on the follow-through by Denzel Dumfries after the England captain had already shot over the bar.
