  1. Jerry West, the basketball legend whose silhouette inspired the iconic NBA logo, has died aged 86, the Los Angeles Clippers have confirmed. West featured in nine NBA Finals with the Los Angeles Lakers, winning the title once in 1972.
  2. Lionel Messi intends to finish his career with Inter Miami – but has no plans to retire just yet. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, 36, joined the Major League Soccer (MLS) club last summer after leaving Paris St-Germain.
  3. Keely Hodgkinson defended her European 800m title with a dominant victory despite struggling with illness, as Great Britain also won women’s 4x100m relay gold on the final night of action in Rome. Hodgkinson, 22, led throughout and held off her rivals in the closing stages to win in one minute 58.65 seconds.
  4. Spaniards Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal will team up to be doubles partners at next month’s Olympic Games in Paris. The tennis will be played on clay at Roland Garros – home of the French Open – where 21-year-old Alcaraz was victorious last week, securing his third Grand Slam title.
  5. Sherfane Rutherford hit a sublime unbeaten 68 as West Indies fought back to beat New Zealand by 13 runs to book their place in the T20 World Cup Super 8s. The co-hosts were in trouble at 22-4 when Rutherford came to the crease and continued to struggle for much of the innings, slumping to 30-5 and 76-7.
