Sports Newspapers: 5 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Sports Newspapers:

  1. The West African Football Union (WAFU) B U-17 third place final between Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets and Ghana will take place on Tuesday evening at the University Stadium.
Both teams had suffered semifinals defeats against Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso, respectively.
  2. Rafael Nadal’s return to the French Open – and possible farewell – ended at the first hurdle as the 14-time winner lost to Alexander Zverev. The 22-time Grand Slam champion was beaten 6-3 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 by the in-form German fourth seed.
  3. Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for goals scored in a Saudi Pro League season after a double for Al-Nassr against Al-Ittihad took his tally to 35. The 39-year-old netted twice in the 4-2 win to overtake Abderrazak Hamdallah’s mark of 34 in 2018-19, though the Morocco striker’s haul – also for Al-Nassr – came from four fewer matches.
  4. Bill Walton, who starred for John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins before becoming a Hall of Famer and one of the biggest stars in basketball broadcasting, died Monday, the league announced on behalf of his family.
Walton, who had a prolonged fight with cancer, was 71.
  5. Charlie Blackmon homered, doubled twice and drove in four runs and the Colorado Rockies used a six-run fourth inning to beat the red-hot Cleveland Guardians 8-6 in Denver on Monday.
Cleveland had its nine-game winning streak snapped, the team’s longest run since it won an American League-record 22 games in a row from Aug. 24 to Sept. 14, 2017.
