  2. Novak Djokovic said he was “extremely glad with the way I felt and the way I played” as he won his first match since knee surgery to reach the second round at Wimbledon. Djokovic, seeking to equal Roger Federer’s men’s record of eight singles titles at SW19, beat Vit Kopriva 6-1 6-2 6-2 under the roof on Centre Court.
  3. Tadej Pogacar regained the leader’s yellow jersey in thrilling fashion as he soloed clear to win stage four of the Tour de France. On the first big mountain stage of the Tour, Pogacar produced an explosive attack 800 metres from the summit of the iconic Col du Galibier and extended his lead on the 20km descent to the line, putting time into all his general classification rivals.
  4. Marketa Vondrousova’s Wimbledon title defence came to an early end as she fell to a surprise first-round defeat by Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
    The Czech became the first unseeded player to win the women’s singles trophy when she triumphed against Ons Jabeur in last year’s final.
  5. Justin Rose came through qualifying for the Open Championship at Royal Troon but his ex-Ryder Cup team-mate Sergio Garcia fell short for the second successive year. Rose tied for top spot at Burnham Burrow in Somerset, playing 36 holes in eight under par to match fellow Englishman Dominic Clemons.
